World AI Week 2025

AI and healthcare in Canada — a reading list:

AI in Cancer Research events: NIH National Cancer Institute webinars (US)

Resharing our AI Awareness Day post from earlier this year: highlighting a few TFRI-funded projects using AI to drive research discovery, personalize care and improve access to clinical trials

AI in Action stories:

AI-based histopathology image analysis reveals a distinct subset of endometrial cancers.

Researchers digitized histopathology slides of tumour sections then trained a deep learning model to identify tumor areas automatically. This used a training set of slides annotated by board-certified histopathologist followed by deep learning models for tumor subtype classification.

“Our work demonstrates the power of AI to detect prognostically different and otherwise unrecognizable subsets of EC where conventional and standard molecular or pathologic criteria fall short, refining image-based tumor classification.” Nature Communications

In translation: “It’s so important that patients with high-risk disease are identified so we can intervene and hopefully prevent recurrence. This AI-based approach will help ensure no patient misses an opportunity for potentially lifesaving interventions.” Dr. Jessica McAlpine, leader of a Terry Fox New Frontiers Program Project Grant focused on precision oncology for endometrial cancer, professor at UBC and surgeon-scientist at BC Cancer and Vancouver General Hospital.

MOHCCN Gold cohort data: it starts with data:

The Data Sharing and Use Pilot program was created to begin unlocking the potential of Canada’s largest and most complete cancer case resource. It allows research teams to access Gold Cohort data for the first time ever.

Through these awards, the Network aims to:

  • Test and validate data sharing and use policies before scaling to the larger Network;
  • Demonstrate the value of data sharing for accelerating cancer research;
  • Build national capacity for large-scale, data-driven precision oncology studies;
  • Foster collaboration among researchers, clinicians, patients and institutions across Canada
