Canada’s Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre (GSC) is a program of the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) and a leading national hub for genome science, data analysis, and technology development. Based in Vancouver, British Columbia, the GSC integrates cutting-edge genomic technologies, advanced computing, and multidisciplinary expertise to support discovery, translation, and impact across health and life sciences.
For more than two decades, the GSC has driven innovation in genomics and bioinformatics. Our work spans high-throughput sequencing, data analytics, and collaborative research that helps shape clinical practice, inform public health strategies, and enable new scientific breakthroughs. The Centre’s contributions have had global reach, including the first application of whole-genome sequencing to guide cancer treatment, major support for the Human Genome Project, and the first published sequence of the SARS coronavirus genome.
As a program within PHSA, the GSC bridges research and health system implementation. This position allows us to work closely with clinicians, researchers, and health leaders to bring genomic insights into real-world use. Our partnerships extend across academic institutions, health authorities, industry, and national and international consortia — enabling projects that range from precision health initiatives to environmental and population-focused genomics.
The GSC houses a state-of-the-art high-throughput sequencing platform, with services and expertise in genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics (including affinity-based proteomics platforms), bioinformatics, and data science. This platform is complemented by one of the largest high performance compute and data centres in Canada and a robust quality management system with CAP, DAP and IS27001 accreditations. These capabilities allow us to support research across cancer, rare diseases, population health, and broader life science domains such as environmental resilience, biodiversity, agriculture, and marine science. We are committed to advancing knowledge that improves human health and strengthens economic and scientific infrastructure in Canada.
Central to the GSC’s success is its people — a diverse, collaborative team of scientists, engineers, data specialists, and professionals who work together to push boundaries and solve complex problems. Our culture emphasizes innovation, quality, openness, and partnership, with a focus on translating discovery into meaningful outcomes.
By combining world-class technology, rigorous data science, and strong strategic partnerships, the GSC continues to be a cornerstone of Canada’s genomics ecosystem — contributing to both foundational science and tangible, real-world impact.
